Description

• The Suckermouth Catfish, commonly known as the plecostomus or pleco, is a freshwater fish belonging to the family Loricariidae. Native to South America, particularly the Amazon River basin, it is popular in the aquarium trade due to its unique appearance and algae-eating habits.

  • Appearance:
    • Elongated, armored body covered in bony plates rather than scales.
    • Distinctive sucker-like mouth on the underside, used for grazing on algae and clinging to surfaces.
    • Varies in color (brown, black, or mottled patterns) with some species showing spots or stripes.
    • Sizes range from 4 inches (10 cm) to over 2 feet (60 cm), depending on the species.
  • Habitat:
    • Prefers slow-moving or stagnant waters with plenty of surfaces (rocks, wood) for grazing.
    • Thrives in warm, tropical environments with temperatures between 72–86°F (22–30°C).
  • Behavior:
    • Nocturnal, often hiding during the day and becoming active at night.
    • Bottom-dweller, using its sucker mouth to scrape algae, biofilm, and leftover food.
    • Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other bottom-dwellers.
  • Diet:
    • Primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and plant matter.
    • Will also eat sinking pellets, vegetables (e.g., zucchini), and occasional protein-based foods.

    • Requires a tank with good filtration, hiding spots, and driftwood or rocks.
    • Needs a balanced diet; over-reliance on tank algae can lead to malnutrition.
    • Some species grow large, requiring tanks of 75 gallons or more.

    • Common Pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus): Grows up to 24 inches, often outgrows small tanks.
    • Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus spp.): Smaller (4–6 inches), with bristly growths on males’ heads.
